Doctor Watson, Lincoln High School’s AP coordinator, told the Wisconsin Rapids School District board the school saw higher AP participation and improved outcomes this year. He said the number of students taking AP exams increased, and 190 exam scores were 3 or higher, raising the program’s success rate from about 72% to roughly 88%.
Watson credited teachers and the district’s trimester schedule for the gains, highlighting strong results in human geography (29 students, 83% with scores of 3 or above), AP precalculus and calculus (precalc feeding into AP courses, 97% 3+ for precalc; AP calculus average 4.3 among 14 test takers), and AP English literature (24 test takers, all scored 3+). He said some dual-enrollment options and other college-credit pathways also affect AP enrollment, but that teachers’ engagement and course design were central to student success.
Superintendent Ron Rasmussen noted the district’s wide array of credit opportunities and the example of a recent graduate who left Lincoln with 57 college credits. The school also reported that several AP teachers participated in conferences and professional development, which staff said supported consistent improvements.
Board members praised the program’s outcomes. No formal action was required on the presentation; the board moved on to routine business after asking a few clarifying questions about enrollment and teacher staffing.
The presentation is the latest update the district provided on academic programs; administrators said they plan to continue monitoring enrollment trends and exploring additional AP and dual-enrollment offerings.
