Mountain Vista Community School presented enrollment, academic goals and student programs at the Oct. 23 board meeting. The school highlighted a unified program plan to improve writing across content areas and described student leadership selection and extra-curricular offerings.
Board of Education members were recognized Oct. 23 after the district’s board received the Cube Award for Urban School Board Excellence, the first Colorado board to receive the national recognition. Trustees, former members and partners joined in photos and a short video highlighting the board’s leadership and equity focus.
Principal Erica Tenson and staff outlined Monterey Elementary’s student demographics, supports for multilingual learners and social-emotional programs, and said the school earned the district’s highest School Performance Framework score.
District leaders told the board on Sept. 25 that changes to H‑1B visa rules and other national factors are worsening teacher shortages; the board also learned it will be honored with an Urban Boards of Education award in October.
Autumn Real, a recent Whitefield High School graduate, urged the Harrison School District 2 Board to broaden reproductive and sexual-health education, citing Colorado law that does not require such instruction and saying many students still have unanswered questions.
Student board representative Marissa Don Juan told the board Sierra High is emphasizing scaffolding, language supports and restorative practices; staff say a district cell-phone policy and mobile administrators have improved engagement and attendance.
At a Sept. 2 special meeting, the Harrison School District No. 2 board voted to cancel the Nov. 4, 2025, school board election, declaring Michelle Wills Hill, Janice JJ Frazier and Emily Tamayo elected by acclamation and directing the designated election official to issue certificates and arrange oaths within 10 days.

At its Aug. 21, 2024 meeting the Harrison School District No. 2 board read a resolution proclaiming Sept. 15–Oct. 15, 2025 as National Hispanic Heritage Month in the district, approved board and superintendent consent agendas, and heard a legislative update from Superintendent Wendy Behanzel about a large state budget shortfall and proposed AI legislation.
