At its Jan. 14 special meeting, Socorro ISD honored trustees during School Board Recognition Month, presented student-created AI 'superhero' artworks, recognized student art and theater winners, a QuestBridge scholar bound for Vanderbilt, and a high-scoring El Dorado football team.
The Socorro ISD board unanimously approved a proclamation recognizing Feb. 2–6, 2026, as National School Counselor Week after a presentation by district counseling director Alma Barrios; three students read the proclamation aloud before the item passed.
Trustees practiced monitoring exercises and agreed on report elements — clear statement of the metric, simple data, superintendent interpretation and an action plan — and on a predictable calendar and question types to keep staff focused on outcomes.
Trustees discussed linking the superintendent’s annual evaluation to the district’s priorities and progress measures, favoring a mix of quantitative goals and formative check-ins to guide decisions about performance and public reporting.
Trustees and a consultant reviewed the board operating procedures, discussed removing redundant policy language, reorganizing the document by topical chapters, and limiting standing committees in favor of time‑bound task forces with sunset dates.
Socorro ISD earned a 66-point FIRST score (substandard) for 2024–25, driven by a tax-rate calculation error and declines in cash reserves and enrollment. CFO David Solis said corrective controls and a balanced FY26 budget are in place; external auditors delivered an unmodified audit opinion and reported no current-year findings.
Trustees approved a set of Lone Star Governance (LSG) goals and constraints focused on student outcomes (reading, math, algebra, CCMR) and adopted an LSG implementation plan and board self‑evaluation; the board will monitor progress through a calendar of interim reports and climate surveys starting May 2026.
To right‑size staffing ahead of a projected enrollment decline (approx. 725–800 students), trustees approved an Early Separation Notice Incentive offering $2,500 to the first 50 qualifying employees who submit voluntary resignations by Feb. 27, 2026.
Trustees approved dissolving seven standing board committees established in policy and set a target effective date of Feb. 1 to transition to regularly scheduled full‑board workshops to increase participation and transparency.
At a Dec. 10 special meeting, Socorro ISD recognized winners of a district Dia de los Muertos art showcase, championship tennis and volleyball teams, Lone Star counseling awardees and the Pebble Hills High School marching band for advancing to state competition; no votes were taken.
