At the March 25 board meeting residents submitted a petition with more than 300 signatures, called for a security audit after two weapons incidents, and one commenter said they have filed suit challenging an automatic-renewal clause in the superintendent's contract; the board moved to executive session to discuss attorney-client, student and personnel matters.
The board said the draft 2026–27 budget is complete and ready for county review and public hearing; officials reported $48,633 in lunch arrears and district enrollment of 2,039 students; personnel and education items were moved and approved with one recusal recorded.
Superintendent Roberta Freeman announced free preschool preregistration through March 4, said the district will expand by four classrooms next year (to nine) under state preschool expansion funding, and board discussion and public comments raised questions about a pre‑K principal position funded by that aid.
Board president delivered a prepared statement denying online accusations that board members “stole money,” explained why the Class‑3 officers agreement was delayed and said the requested contract language on the $50,000 deposit has been added, putting the agreement back on the agenda.
At the Feb. 19 meeting the board approved the prior meeting minutes, personnel recommendations, education items (with a recusal on one item), policy first readings and facilities & finance items; a motion to enter executive session was also approved.
During two public comment periods, residents raised concerns about teacher turnover, counseling vacancies, discipline, alleged favoritism, budget transfers and communication; some speakers urged a vote of no confidence in district leadership and asked for clearer public records and follow‑up answers.
Auditor Bob Swisher told the Middlesex Borough Board of Education the district's annual audit produced no findings and that the district can bolster capital and maintenance reserves; he offered to answer questions but no formal action was required.
The board recognized student of the month Ariana and employee of the month Erica Jungels, presented the Middlesex High School baseball team's Group 1 state championship rings, and heard that the district's elementary band has grown to about 124 students.
The board read a resolution mourning John Kaiser, who served 27 years as district treasurer (died 12/03/2025), and approved a motion to meet in executive session on Dec. 17, 2025 to discuss attorney-client privileged matters, a confidential student matter, and a confidential personnel matter.
A public commenter told the Middlesex Borough Board of Education that a roughly $3,500 workshop contract appeared to have been signed and performed before board approval and without the purchasing agent’s signature; the commenter said they have consulted counsel and may seek emergency relief if the practice recurs.
