The Tiffin City Schools Board of Education on Wednesday presented a contingency reduction plan the district would implement if a Nov. 4 operating levy fails.
Tiffin City Schools staff on Thursday presented a draft plan of potential budget reductions intended to close roughly a $3,000,000 shortfall, saying the recently passed levy of about $3,193,000 would ease but not eliminate the need for further savings.
Tiffin City Schools staff told the board the district could save an estimated $458,000 a year by moving to state-minimum busing, which would extend the student walk radius from roughly a half-mile to two miles and eliminate some high-school routes.
Staff recommended eliminating maintenance overtime and summer workers and flagged possible contract reductions, including a mental-health services contract; food service meals are expected to remain free under the Community Eligibility Provision for about two more years, and weekend food bags would continue via Kiwanis donations.
Faced with a multi-million-dollar shortfall, staff proposed pay-to-participate fees or elimination of district-funded extracurriculars; the district spends about $410,000 yearly on these programs and projects fees could raise roughly $318,000 but warned fees would likely reduce participation and would not fully close the gap.
Board introduced Dr. Joanna Barris as a newly appointed trustee and recognized Brenda Eisenhower for long service in special education across district schools, with remarks by principal Jen Watson and board leaders.
Treasurer presented an October forecast showing the district remains solvent but vulnerable to state budget changes; trustees approved the forecast and warned that, if a proposed earned-income tax fails, roughly $3 million in cuts across departments could be required.
Trustees approved a contract continuation with Wellness Counseling Solutions LLC for student mental-health support and contracted temporary tech services from a regional cooperative while the district recruits a permanent tech employee.
The board approved several vendor contracts and service agreements: continued with K12 Business Consulting, renewed an agreement with American Fidelity for flexible benefits, approved Julian Group (Medicaid) services and a one‑year engagement with Zepeda & Associates for GAAP auditing services.
Trustees approved an MOU to reinstate four content‑area department chairs and one electives chair at Tiffin Columbian High School funded partly from savings tied to security staffing changes, adopted 2025‑26 student/parent handbooks with planned committee review, and updated policies to align with recent state legislation.
