The Angels Camp City Council is considering a significant investment to address the deteriorating condition of a city-owned building that has remained vacant since June 2020. During a recent meeting, city staff highlighted the urgent need for repairs, particularly to the roof, which may not withstand another winter without intervention.
The building, which has seen minimal maintenance over the past four years, has been the subject of previous discussions regarding its potential sale. However, the council is now weighing the option of investing approximately $20,000 to replace the roof before winter sets in. Two local contractors provided quotes for the roof replacement, with estimates ranging from $15,400 to $18,378.
City staff emphasized that protecting this asset is crucial, regardless of whether the building is sold in the future. The funding for the repairs could come from the city’s general fund reserve, which currently holds about $1.5 million, or from American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, which have a balance of around $300,000.
The council's decision will not only impact the building's future but also reflects broader community concerns about maintaining city assets and ensuring they do not fall into further disrepair. As discussions continue, the council is tasked with balancing immediate repair needs against long-term plans for the property.
