She noted that Texas has only 80 available workers for every 100 jobs, with 60% of non-working parents citing childcare as a primary reason for their absence from the workforce.
Stroifert highlighted the formation of the Employers for Childcare Partnership, aimed at addressing these challenges. She pointed out that other states are investing in childcare as a critical infrastructure, which Texas must also consider to remain competitive. She urged the legislature to create a centralized resource for businesses to access childcare information and streamline regulations to support childcare providers.
Jeanette Ward, president and CEO of Texas Mutual, shared her experience in providing on-site childcare for employees, which helped retain talent in a competitive market. She stressed the importance of affordable childcare for working families and the need for businesses to collaborate with childcare providers to expand access.
Phaedra Redefer, executive director of Workforce Solutions North Central Texas, provided statistics showing that nearly one-third of employees are parents, and many struggle to find affordable childcare. She noted that Texas loses over $7.5 billion annually due to employee absences related to childcare issues. Redefer called for innovative solutions, including public-private partnerships and better data collection on childcare providers.
Jared Toussaint from the Dallas Regional Chamber echoed these sentiments, stating that accessible childcare is essential for workforce participation. He highlighted successful local initiatives, such as partnerships between employers and childcare providers, which have improved access for employees.
The meeting underscored a collective call for legislative action to enhance childcare support in Texas. Stakeholders emphasized the need for strategic investments, streamlined regulations, and innovative partnerships to ensure that working families have the childcare resources they need to thrive in the workforce.
