The Michigan State Transportation Commission convened on November 7, 2024, to discuss a significant investment plan for the state's transportation infrastructure over the next five years. The proposed budget totals $15.5 billion, allocated across highway programs, public transportation, and aeronautics.

The highway program will receive the largest share, amounting to $10.8 billion. This funding is earmarked for various initiatives, including $6.7 billion for repairing and rebuilding roads and bridges, and $2.6 billion for routine maintenance activities such as pothole filling and snow plowing. Additionally, $888 million is designated for system safety and operational improvements, which include signage and traffic signals. The plan also includes $56 million for roadside facilities and $520 million for state and federally funded programs, such as recreational trails.

For the upcoming fiscal year 2025, the highway program alone is set at $2.9 billion. Key projects highlighted include major reconstruction efforts on Interstate 94 and Interstate 75, with $1.4 billion allocated specifically for these large-scale projects. The budget also includes $356 million for bridge repairs, which encompasses funding for the Bluewater Bridge Plaza.

Public transportation will receive $3.7 billion over the next five years, with $753 million allocated for fiscal year 2025. This funding will support local bus operations and transit capital projects, ensuring the maintenance of current services. Rail and port programs will see an investment of $163 million, focusing on Amtrak support and freight rail improvements.

The aeronautics program is set to receive $1 billion over five years, with $240 million planned for fiscal year 2025. This includes funding for the Airport Improvement Program, which aims to preserve critical airport infrastructure.

The commission emphasized the importance of aligning these investments with the Michigan Mobility 2045 State Long Range Transportation Plan, focusing on transportation equity, resiliency, and complete streets mobility. The meeting underscored the state's commitment to enhancing its transportation infrastructure and ensuring safe and efficient travel for all residents.
