During a recent government meeting, the Bettendorf Police Chief recognized two local heroes for their life-saving actions during a water rescue incident. Captain Michael Gansamer and deckhand Jackson Fowler were commended for their quick response on August 23, 2024, when they assisted in rescuing a person who had jumped into the Mississippi River from the I-74 bridge.
The incident unfolded around 10:13 AM when the police received a report of the jump. The Bettendorf Police and Fire Departments quickly mobilized, deploying a rescue boat and a drone to locate the individual. Meanwhile, Gansamer and Fowler were operating the Channel Cat water taxi nearby. Officers onshore directed them to the scene.
As they approached, Fowler threw a life preserver to the distressed individual, who initially resisted help. Despite the challenges, Fowler managed to grab the person's wrist and encouraged him to board the boat. Eventually, the individual complied and was safely brought ashore.
Thanks to the teamwork and swift actions of Gansamer and Fowler, the individual received medical and mental health treatment after being handed over to emergency services. The police chief expressed deep gratitude, stating that their efforts saved a life and provided the individual with a second chance. Each received a letter of commendation for their bravery and quick thinking during the critical situation.
