In a recent government meeting, the Board of County Commissioners discussed a conditional use permit request from Honeywell Construction Company Inc. The proposal seeks to expand an existing aggregate pit operation on an approximately 80-acre site located about 1,000 feet east of the intersection of Highway 338 and Desert Creek Road in Smith Valley.
Senior Planner Lisa Nash presented the details of the request, highlighting that the expansion would occur on adjacent property currently designated for agricultural and grazing use. The existing aggregate pit is situated directly below the proposed expansion area, which is part of a larger 680-acre site.
Nash clarified that the expansion is intended solely for future reserves, with no immediate plans to increase operational capabilities or introduce asphalt mixing at the new site. The existing operations will remain unchanged, and access to the property will continue via Highway 338.
The commissioners are expected to forward their recommendation regarding the permit to the Board of County Commissioners for further consideration. The outcome of this proposal could have implications for local land use and resource management in the area.
