In a significant move, the Liberty Elementary School District 25 Governing Board has announced its decision to discontinue the use of the Arizona School Board Association (ASBA) Policy Services, effective January 1, 2025. This resolution, adopted during a public meeting on September 16, 2024, stems from concerns regarding the ASBA's policies, which the board claims do not align with state statutes and undermine parental rights.
The board expressed dissatisfaction with the ASBA's use of taxpayer dollars for lobbying efforts that promote the expansion of mental and behavioral health services in schools, arguing that these initiatives could potentially harm children. Additionally, they criticized the ASBA for providing policies that require extensive legal review and modification to comply with state education laws, citing frequent citation errors and unnecessary policy requirements.
Furthermore, the Liberty Governing Board accused the ASBA of instructing school officials on how to circumvent open meeting laws and redirecting legislative authority from school boards to administrative bodies. The board emphasized the importance of parental rights, asserting that these rights should remain unimpeded by governmental entities.
In response to these issues, the Liberty Elementary School District will instead contract with the model policy program through the Arizona Risk and Retention Trust, aiming to ensure that their policies are both compliant with state statutes and supportive of parental involvement in education.
