In a recent government meeting, the Madison City Council unanimously adopted a redevelopment master plan aimed at revitalizing city-owned properties in the Park and Badger area. This initiative, which encompasses 4 acres of land, includes plans for affordable housing, a modern public health facility, and the replacement of Fire Station 6.
Director Wachter presented the plan, highlighting the collaborative efforts of the Community Development Authority (CDA) and a selected development team, which includes the Alexander Company and Potter Lawson. The project is set to move forward with funding allocated in the 2024 and 2025 capital budgets, contingent upon the adoption of the master plan.
The proposed development will feature a mix of housing types, including a 180-unit workforce housing building and a 50-unit senior housing facility. The design aims to incorporate community feedback, emphasizing sustainability and adequate parking. The project is expected to begin construction in early 2026, with completion anticipated by early 2028.
In addition to the redevelopment plan, the Council also approved a non-competitive purchase for new software services related to special assessments, which will modernize the city's outdated systems. This software will facilitate property assessments for improvements like curb and gutter work, transitioning to a more robust cloud-based platform.
Lastly, the Council discussed amending the parks division budget to remove a paid parking pilot program, reflecting ongoing adjustments to city operations based on community input and financial considerations.
