In a recent Dalton City Council meeting, officials conducted the second reading of Ordinance 24-34, which addresses the closure and abandonment of public rights on Gravelly Street and Irwin Street. The ordinance aims to facilitate the sale of a home that was inadvertently built on the right-of-way of Gravelly Street, which has never been developed.
City staff explained that the request to vacate these streets was initiated by the property owners seeking to clear the title for their home. Initially, the request was limited to a small area adjacent to their property. However, it was later expanded to include the entire length of both streets due to a petition from a common landowner who owns multiple adjacent properties.
During the notification process, two of the seven adjoining landowners expressed objections, citing concerns that closing the streets would limit their access to their parcels. In response, city staff recommended amending the closure limits to address these concerns, proposing to close only the unopened portion of Gravelly Street up to the Isaacs parcel and to close Irwin Street entirely, as it is adjacent to a single landowner.
The council unanimously approved the amended ordinance, which aims to balance the interests of the property owners while facilitating the necessary land transactions.
Additionally, the council discussed Resolution 24-17, which pertains to the adoption of the 2025 budget for the City of Dalton. This resolution outlines appropriations for various funds, anticipated revenue sources, and ensures that expenditures do not exceed these appropriations.
