In a recent meeting, the Leavenworth City Council made significant strides in urban development and public safety by approving several key projects.
One of the major decisions was the unanimous adoption of Gordon 1703, a new subdivision, following the removal of a previous restriction limiting development to one acre. Council members noted that this limitation was unnecessary and hindered the effective use of the tool.
Additionally, the council approved a consultant agreement for the Speed Hill Drive Active Transportation Improvements Project. This initiative aims to extend sidewalks and bike lanes along Steno Street, enhancing connectivity from Evans to Pine Street. The project will also involve replacing water services beneath the new sidewalks, aligning with the city’s Integrated Capital Improvement Program. Funding for this project includes federal grants, with plans to request additional funds to cover increased costs.
The council also addressed pedestrian safety by awarding the Commercial Street pedestrian guardrail project. This project, located between 3rd and 8th streets, aims to protect pedestrians from a steep slope leading to the Wenatchee River. The council rerouted Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) funds to ensure timely completion, as the funds must be utilized by March 2025. Coral Construction Company was selected as the lowest responsive bidder for this unique construction project, which employs innovative methods to install guardrails effectively.
These decisions reflect the council's commitment to improving infrastructure and public safety in Leavenworth, ensuring that community needs are met through proactive planning and development.
