In a recent city council meeting, members approved plans for a community event and the construction of new pickleball courts, reflecting a commitment to enhancing local recreational opportunities.
The council unanimously approved a full-day event scheduled for a Saturday, which will feature outdoor and indoor activities, along with special promotions from downtown restaurants. This initiative aims to boost local business and community engagement, following feedback from vendors and store owners who expressed a desire for increased foot traffic.
Additionally, the council discussed the awarding of a bid for the construction of six pickleball courts at Westmore Park, to be carried out by Runner Sports Services, also known as FieldTurf USA Inc., for a total of $356,689. The project will repurpose existing tennis courts, which have seen little use due to their deteriorating condition. The new courts will include necessary infrastructure such as grading, surfacing, fencing, and lighting, with plans to expand the parking lot to accommodate increased visitors.
Council members noted a growing local demand for pickleball, citing the popularity of similar facilities in nearby Gearing, where courts are frequently occupied. The funding for this project will come from American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, underscoring the city’s strategic investment in community health and recreation.
The meeting concluded with council members sharing updates on various meetings attended since the last session, emphasizing ongoing communication and collaboration within the council.
