In a recent government meeting, officials provided an update on the construction of a new 115,000-volt power line and associated substations aimed at improving electrical reliability in the region. The project, which has been in the works since its board approval in 2022, is set to span approximately 10 miles, connecting various substations, including the Victory Hill substation located on Military Road.
The construction is being overseen by a team with extensive experience, including a lead inspector from the Mississippi Power and Distribution (MPPD) with 35 years in the field. The contractor, Watts Electric, has been in business for 42 years and is responsible for the construction of the power line. The project is expected to commence with material deliveries this week, followed by drilling and foundation work next week.
Officials emphasized the importance of safety throughout the construction process, with daily safety meetings planned to ensure the well-being of workers and the public. The project will involve clearing some land, including trees and brush, and installing temporary access culverts, which will be removed and the land restored after construction.
Additionally, the meeting highlighted efforts to convert overhead power lines to underground lines to facilitate the new construction. This approach aims to minimize hazards associated with high-voltage lines and improve overall infrastructure safety.
The project is anticipated to significantly reduce congestion in the electrical grid, enhancing reliability for the city and its surrounding areas. As construction progresses, officials will continue to engage with local landowners to address any concerns and ensure the restoration of the land to its original condition post-construction.
