In a recent government meeting, representatives from OUTFRONT Media presented a proposal to construct and operate a large outdoor advertising sign, commonly known as a billboard, in the township's B1 district. The proposed billboard, measuring 14 by 48 feet and standing 60 feet tall, aims to capture the attention of drivers on the heavily trafficked Interstate Route 80.
Currently, billboards are not permitted in the B1 district, prompting OUTFRONT to seek a use variance for this non-conforming structure. The company holds a state permit for a multi-message billboard and has been operating in New Jersey since the 1940s, with a significant presence that includes over 3,500 displays statewide.
John Antal, the General Manager for OUTFRONT Media New Jersey, provided testimony regarding the company's extensive experience in outdoor advertising, emphasizing their operations in the state since 2009, particularly with digital billboards. The proposal is supported by engineering and planning experts who will testify in favor of the application.
The meeting included discussions on review letters from township officials, which will be considered as part of the variance application process. The outcome of this proposal could set a precedent for future outdoor advertising developments in the area, highlighting the ongoing tension between commercial interests and local zoning regulations.
