In a recent government meeting, developers presented a proposal for a multifamily housing project at 923-929 Washington Street in Norwood, Massachusetts. The project aims to replace a dilapidated building adjacent to Honeydew Donuts with a modern apartment complex, featuring 32 residential units, including eight affordable units, which constitutes 25% of the total. The development is positioned within walking distance of local amenities, including a hospital and commuter rail, and is intended to cater to residents working in nearby facilities, such as Moderna.
The developers, represented by new counsel and principal Pat Corrigan, emphasized their commitment to collaborating with the town and local residents. They acknowledged previous concerns raised by the planning board and neighbors, which led to a reduction in the number of proposed units and adjustments to the building's height to align with the surrounding skyline. The project is not part of the MBTA overlay and requires a comprehensive permit due to zoning restrictions.
During the meeting, Corrigan highlighted the outreach efforts made to engage with neighbors and address their concerns regarding stormwater management, drainage, and electrical services. Feedback from local departments, including the building and fire departments, indicated that previous issues had been resolved, paving the way for further discussions with the zoning board.
However, some board members expressed reservations about the project's size, shape, and parking provisions. Concerns were raised regarding the adequacy of parking spaces, with the proposal offering 43 spots while the requirement could be as high as 86. The developers acknowledged these concerns and indicated a willingness to refine their plans based on community feedback.
As the project moves forward, the developers aim to foster a partnership with the town and its residents, seeking to create a development that meets the needs of the community while revitalizing a currently underutilized site.
