In a recent government meeting, attorney AJ Capano presented a proposal on behalf of Julio Pena, seeking a zoning map amendment for the property located at 282 McGrath Highway. The request aims to change the zoning designation from a neighborhood residential district to a small business overlay district, facilitating the opening of a new restaurant, Bonfire Boston.
Capano highlighted the property's historical use as a diner and restaurant dating back to 1977, noting its most recent operation as a bar and restaurant until its closure in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since leasing the property in May 2023, Pena has undertaken significant renovations, including roof repairs and electrical updates, to prepare for the restaurant's opening.
The proposal has garnered support from local residents, with a petition signed by 13 neighbors backing the amendment. Additionally, Capano mentioned the endorsement of Ward 2 Councilor JT Scott, emphasizing the need for revitalization in the area, which is on the fringes of Union Square. He argued that the restaurant would enhance community vibrancy and contribute positively to the neighborhood's development.
The planning board and land use committee were invited to ask questions before public comments commenced, indicating a collaborative approach to the proposal's consideration. The outcome of this request will be pivotal in determining the future of the property and its role in the local community.
