In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the need for updated speed limits on Robins Road, which currently lacks posted legal limits. According to state law, the default speed limit is 50 miles per hour unless otherwise specified, but this does not guarantee safety at that speed. The meeting highlighted significant discrepancies in speed limits surrounding Robins Road, with 35 mph to the east and 55 mph to the west, creating a 20 mph difference at the intersection.
The proposal includes establishing a speed limit of 30 mph for the first 1,400 feet of Robins Road, which encompasses key areas such as the longhouse and the casino driveway. Beyond this section, the speed limit would increase to 45 mph. This recommendation is based on a recent traffic study that determined the 85th percentile speed—where only 15% of drivers exceed this speed—was 29.2 mph in the busy casino area, indicating a need for lower limits due to high traffic and turning movements.
Robins Road has transitioned from a gravel surface to a chip-sealed hard surface, which has prompted the need for a reevaluation of speed limits. The study also revealed that in the less congested areas further along the road, the 85th percentile speed increased to 48.4 mph. The officials emphasized that the proposed changes aim to enhance safety for both drivers and pedestrians, particularly given the road's role in accessing local businesses and residences.
