In a recent government meeting, officials presented a new initiative aimed at assisting the homeless population through a program dubbed the Homeless Assistance Program (HAP). The program, spearheaded by code enforcement officer Heath Hankins, will focus on connecting homeless individuals with resources and support systems, particularly for those wishing to reunite with family members in warmer climates.
Hankins, who has a background in law enforcement and experience working with the homeless community, will utilize an iPad to engage with individuals in need. The program will facilitate access to shelters and other resources, including the provision of one-way bus tickets for those who wish to return home. Funding for the initiative will come from a $20,000 allocation from the city manager's contingency fund, which will also cover the purchase of a mobile printer to streamline operations.
During the discussion, council members emphasized the compassionate nature of the program, likening it to the biblical story of the prodigal son, and expressed support for helping individuals reconnect with their families. A motion to proceed with the program was unanimously approved by the council.
Additionally, the meeting addressed concerns regarding the local water supply amid ongoing drought conditions, with plans to provide citizens with information on accessing water supply data from various lakes in the area. The council is expected to take further action as necessary to address these water supply issues.
