In a passionate address to local government officials, Nikosa Carras, a student representative from Cohea, advocated for the expansion of the school's facilities, emphasizing the significant benefits it would bring to both students and the Hialeah community. Carras highlighted that 76% of Cohea's student body consists of Hialeah residents, underscoring the school's deep ties to the local community.
Carras outlined the current limitations of the existing softball fields, which are primarily used by Cohea's athletics program. He proposed transforming these fields into a multidimensional facility that would include a soccer field, HVAC systems, pickleball courts, and access to an indoor basketball gymnasium. This expansion aims to provide Hialeah residents with greater access to recreational facilities, including outdoor basketball and tennis courts, during school hours.
The student representative also addressed concerns about traffic and parking, noting that the proposed design would increase parking availability and alleviate congestion during school hours. Carras urged officials to consider the safety and well-being of students, expressing a desire for a more equipped and secure environment.
Carras concluded by emphasizing the importance of building a positive legacy for the community and ensuring that Hialeah residents gain more from the project than they lose. He called for support of the expansion, which he believes will revitalize the park and enhance the overall quality of life for local families.
