The ASD Foundation is set to award nearly $30,000 in grants to educators following a review of 29 special project proposals submitted last month. Each grant will be capped at $1,200, with recipients announced in December and funds distributed in January for projects to be completed during the spring semester. Additionally, the Foundation is facilitating Visual Arts Residences in four elementary schools this fall, where local artists are engaging students in creating murals and conducting workshops.
In a separate report, Dr. Kathy Nelson, assistant director of special programs and services at the Carbon Lehigh Intermittent Unit (CLIU), highlighted the establishment of the Whitehall Co Play Early Learning Center. This new facility consolidates classrooms and staff to better serve children with developmental, physical, and social-emotional needs. The center features 11 classrooms and sensory-friendly spaces, aiming to enhance collaboration and support for over 27,100 children in the 2023-2024 school year.
The CLIU board also approved the proposed 2025-2026 general operation budget, which includes a 0% increase in district contributions and an overall budget increase of 2.17%. This budget is crucial as it is the only one mandated by Pennsylvania statute requiring board action. The CLIU administration plans to visit all programs in Carbon and Lehigh counties during American Education Week, thanking staff for their dedication to helping children learn.
