The New Canaan Parks Department has received approval from selectmen to undertake emergency repairs to walking trails and sports facilities damaged by a severe storm on August 18, 2024. The storm caused significant washouts along several trails at Waveny Park, necessitating a contract with Hussey Bros Excavating for repairs totaling $31,000. The funds are available from the general fund budget.
During the meeting, officials discussed the specific areas affected, including trails from the west parking lot to Lapham Road and other locations that have experienced repeated washouts. Concerns were raised about the effectiveness of current trail construction methods in preventing future damage from heavy rainfall. The department has been proactive in addressing previous issues by enhancing drainage systems where necessary.
In addition to trail repairs, the Parks Department also sought approval for repairs to the netting and poles at Mellet Field, which were damaged by a fallen tree during the same storm. The total cost for this repair is $12,991, which includes a 20% contingency due to the nature of the damage.
Furthermore, the department is moving forward with the removal and resetting of granite curbing for the Waveney fitness area, with a contract awarded for $9,500. This work is part of the final preparations for new surfacing in the fitness area, which has garnered community interest.
Lastly, the New Canaan Nature Center is set to demolish a pedestrian ramp at the greenhouse, which has reached the end of its usable life. The project, budgeted at $50,000, aims to eliminate potential hazards and improve the area’s aesthetics. The ramp's removal will not impact ADA compliance, as the existing facilities meet accessibility standards.
These initiatives reflect the town's commitment to maintaining and improving public spaces while addressing the challenges posed by extreme weather events.
