During a recent government meeting, a public hearing was held to address a resident's concerns regarding a home improvement project that inadvertently violated local building codes. Judy Lynn Yacht, a resident of Regina Road, shared her experience of constructing a carport and installing a generator and air conditioning unit while recovering from a broken leg during the pandemic.
Yacht explained that she had hired a licensed contractor to manage the project due to her medical condition, which affected her ability to oversee the work. She believed the contractor was adhering to the necessary codes and regulations. However, it was later revealed that the placement of the carport was not in compliance with local ordinances, specifically regarding its proximity to the property line.
During her testimony, Yacht expressed her regret for not being aware of the code violations at the time of construction. She noted that had she known, she would have adjusted the placement of the generator and air conditioning unit to ensure compliance while still maintaining functionality for her vehicle.
The contractor, who was expected to attend the meeting, was not present. Yacht mentioned that he had been dealing with personal hardships, including the death of a family member and his own health issues, which may have impacted his ability to manage the project effectively.
The meeting highlighted the challenges residents face when navigating building regulations, especially during difficult personal circumstances. The local government is expected to review the situation further to determine the appropriate course of action regarding the code violations.
