In a recent government meeting, officials discussed critical updates regarding the replacement of fire alarm systems in local schools and a change order for a softball field project.

The meeting began with a report on the scheduled replacement of fire alarm systems at three elementary schools—Fort Washington, Maple Glen, and the Thomas Fitzwer Administration Building. Officials noted that while the current systems are operational, the components are becoming obsolete, with manufacturers no longer producing necessary parts. As a result, the administration recommended moving forward with the replacement project, which is slated for summer 2025. Jarrettown Elementary was initially included in the replacement plan but will be deferred due to upcoming renovation studies.

The proposal for design services was awarded to ICS, which submitted the lowest bid of $65,020, compared to Fervarelli Engineering's bid of $77,000. This decision was made to ensure that the new systems would be installed efficiently while utilizing existing parts from the other schools to extend the life of the Jarrettown system.

Additionally, the board addressed a change order for the softball field project, which had been discussed in previous meetings. The additional work required for the project has resulted in a cost increase of $13,558.19. Despite this increase, officials expressed confidence that the project remains on schedule for completion ahead of the softball season, with no requests for an extension from the contractor, Skeptant.

Looking ahead, the board plans to provide a comprehensive update on the five-year capital plan at the upcoming December Finance Committee meeting, which will include evaluations of ongoing projects and future needs.
