In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the ongoing redevelopment of a 48-acre site in Syracuse, which is currently undergoing demolition as part of a significant urban renewal project. The Albanese Organization has been selected to lead the first phase of this redevelopment, which includes the construction of two residential apartment buildings with a total of 261 units, as well as 27 townhouses to be developed by Home Headquarters.
The state, with support from Governor Hochul, has pledged $29 million for the demolition of the existing structures, which began in June and is expected to be completed by April 2025. This demolition is seen as a crucial step in reimagining the site for future development.
The master plan for the site was adopted by the common council last year, and the current discussions focus on formally authorizing a public hearing for Phase 1 of the project. This phase will not only include the apartment buildings but also the townhouses, with both projects being designed to complement each other.
City officials emphasized that infrastructure improvements, including new roadways, sewer mains, and water lines, are also part of the development plan. These enhancements aim to make the site shovel-ready for construction, which is anticipated to commence shortly after the demolition is completed.
The meeting highlighted the collaborative efforts between the city and the Albanese Organization, with representatives present to address any questions regarding the project. The redevelopment is positioned as a transformative initiative for the area, aiming to provide diverse housing options and improve local infrastructure.
