In a recent government meeting, officials discussed a variance request from New Covenant Church located at 701 Gentilly Wall, aimed at removing the requirement for pervious pavers in their parking lot. The church plans to construct a second building and expand its parking area to accommodate a new children's ministry and daycare, addressing a local shortage of such facilities.
Pastor David McClendon presented the church's case, highlighting that extensive hydrology reports—totaling 230 pages—indicate that the current drainage system is sufficient without the additional pervious pavers. He noted that the clay-heavy soil on the property would hinder water permeability, necessitating costly underground piping to manage water runoff effectively.
The proposed development includes a significant investment in a reservoir, estimated at $160,000, to manage stormwater. McClendon argued that the additional expense of installing pervious pavers, estimated at $48,000, would be excessive for the project’s scale.
City staff recommended approval of the variance, contingent upon the applicant meeting specific conditions. The Planning Commission had previously voted unanimously in favor of the request. The public hearing concluded without opposition, and the motion to close the hearing was passed.
The church's expansion is part of a broader vision, with plans for further development in the coming years. The project aims to enhance community services while ensuring adequate environmental management through existing natural features on the property.
