In a recent government meeting, city officials discussed plans to enhance the main east-west corridor in West Mime, a heavily traveled road that has long been underutilized. The initiative aims to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists, while also addressing traffic concerns related to nearby schools and community events.

City Engineer Frank Alonzo presented a vision for transforming the corridor into a more pedestrian-friendly streetscape, which would include bicycle facilities and improved access to local businesses and restaurants. The project seeks to create a vibrant connection between the east and west sides of the city, allowing residents to walk or bike to various destinations without relying on cars.

Key components of the project include the installation of traffic circles to calm traffic and enhance safety. Studies have shown that replacing traffic signals with roundabouts can improve traffic flow while providing safer crossings for pedestrians. The county has already approved plans for a roundabout at the intersection of 16th Street and 62nd Avenue, with funding now being sought to move forward.

Additionally, the meeting highlighted the upcoming Ludlam Trail project, a nine-mile pedestrian and bike corridor that will connect Dadeland to the 836 highway. This new trail is expected to complement the improvements in West Mime by providing a clear east-west path for residents and visitors alike.

The proposed enhancements also focus on beautifying the streetscape, with plans for landscaping and other aesthetic improvements to create a more inviting environment.
