In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the progress of the Skinner project, which is set for completion by February 26, 2026. The contractor is aiming to expedite work, with significant activities planned around December 16-20. Despite the ongoing construction, concerns about traffic disruptions have surfaced, prompting plans for a public meeting with the Department of Transportation (DOT) on December 12 to gather community feedback.

Commissioner Gallo acknowledged the challenges posed by the project, noting that the contractor is eager to proceed despite the inconveniences faced by local businesses, particularly those near the Highland detour. The city is working with DOT to enhance signage to support affected businesses.

The Skinner project has an estimated total cost of $12 million, with funding contributions from various sources, including $5 million from DOT and $1 million from Fort Pinellas. The Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) is also involved, contributing approximately $6 million, with half of that amount sourced from Pinellas County.

Additionally, the meeting highlighted plans for the installation of new mast arms at key intersections, replacing existing overhead span wires that have been deemed visually unappealing. These mast arms will enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists, particularly at the trail crossing. The design will maintain a consistent aesthetic with existing infrastructure, ensuring a cohesive look throughout the area.

Officials expressed optimism about the project's trajectory, emphasizing the importance of community input and collaboration with local businesses as construction progresses.
