During a recent government meeting in Coeur d'Alene, Council President Dan English delivered two significant proclamations, emphasizing the city's commitment to honoring American history and civic values.
The first proclamation declared the week of September 17-23, 2024, as Constitution Week, marking the 237th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution's drafting. English urged citizens to reaffirm the ideals of the Constitution and protect the freedoms it guarantees. This annual recognition aligns with public law that mandates the President of the United States to issue a proclamation for Constitution Week.
The second proclamation recognized September 21, 2024, as Daughters of the American Revolution Day, celebrating the contributions of the organization as it prepares for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026. English highlighted the importance of reflecting on the nation’s past and honoring the sacrifices made for American independence. He noted the Daughters of the American Revolution's efforts to celebrate this milestone through various projects, including the installation of a commemorative stone monument at Independence Point, which will be unveiled in a ceremony on September 21.
In addition to the proclamations, the meeting featured a presentation by the Coeur d'Alene Fire Department, where Captain Jake Beaker awarded a life-saving commendation to Dave Powell. Powell was recognized for his heroic actions on July 6, 2024, when he rescued an 18-year-old male who had been struggling in the water. Beaker praised Powell's quick response, stating that without his intervention, the young man could have faced dire consequences.
The meeting underscored the city's dedication to celebrating its historical roots while recognizing the contributions of its citizens in preserving community safety and heritage.
