Residents of Bowie voiced strong opposition during a recent city council meeting regarding a proposed extension that could increase traffic in their neighborhood. Sherry Cox Stewart, a long-time resident of Dew Drive, expressed her concerns about the potential impact on the community, highlighting the lack of sidewalks and existing traffic challenges in Woodmore Estate. She emphasized that the proposed changes would unfairly burden the neighborhood, particularly affecting children who walk to school.
John Hines, another resident, echoed these sentiments, sharing his experiences with speeding vehicles and safety issues on Driftwood Road. He noted a troubling incident where a car flipped due to excessive speed, underscoring the dangers posed by increased traffic. Both speakers urged the council to reconsider the extension, fearing it would exacerbate existing problems rather than improve the quality of life in the area.
The council acknowledged the residents' concerns and indicated that the topic would be revisited later in the meeting under new business. In addition to the traffic discussion, council members took the opportunity to remind residents about the importance of participating in the upcoming election and to honor Veterans Day with a ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park.
The meeting highlighted the active engagement of Bowie residents in local governance, as they seek to protect their community's quality of life amidst proposed developments.
