In a recent government meeting, the council convened to address several key matters, including the swearing-in of new firefighters and a motion to enter a closed session for sensitive discussions.
The meeting began with a motion by Council Member Roberts to enter a closed session, which was unanimously approved by the council. The purpose of this closed session was to discuss the character, professional competence, or physical and mental health of individuals, as well as matters related to imminent litigation and real estate transactions.
Following the closed session, the council resumed its public meeting, starting with the Pledge of Allegiance led by Council Member Fred Lowery. The highlight of the meeting was the administration of the oath of office for seven new members of the fire department, conducted by Fire Chief Clint Smith. Six of these individuals were new hires, while one was being promoted within the department.
Chief Smith expressed gratitude for the council's support in attracting talented individuals to the fire service, emphasizing the diverse experience the new recruits bring to the organization. Among the new firefighters sworn in was Tyler Cox, a Draper resident who has been with the department for a few months and is nearing completion of his paramedic certification.
The meeting also featured the introduction of five lateral hires, all experienced paramedics joining the department from various locations, including out-of-state recruits from Colorado and Texas. Each new firefighter was honored with a badge-pinning ceremony, where family members participated in the tradition.
Overall, the meeting underscored the council's commitment to enhancing public safety through the recruitment of skilled personnel while also addressing important administrative matters in a closed session.
