During a recent city council meeting, the Lawton community celebrated the achievements of two outstanding individuals for their contributions to local initiatives.
City Manager highlighted Cam Wen from the stormwater division of the public works department, who was recognized with the True North Award for his exceptional volunteer efforts. Wen organized a community cleanup under the bridges on Cash Road, mobilizing 15 to 20 volunteers to collect approximately 60 bags of trash, including hazardous materials from a former homeless encampment. His initiative not only improved the local environment but also showcased his commitment to community service.
Additionally, Rhonda Norrell was honored for her role in establishing an arts camp that has successfully operated for two consecutive summers. The program, funded through the city’s Capital Improvement Plan, provides affordable arts education to children at a cost of just 60 cents per hour per child. Over the past 15 years, the initiative has received significant community support, totaling around $2.5 million, reflecting its positive impact on local youth.
The council also proclaimed November 1, 2024, as Extra Mile Day in Lawton, recognizing the importance of volunteerism and community engagement. This initiative aligns with the national movement to celebrate cities that foster a spirit of service among their residents.
Both Wen and Norrell's efforts exemplify the dedication of Lawton citizens to enhancing their community through personal initiative and collaboration.
