In early October, the special education advisory committee at Henry County Public Schools hosted an informational meeting aimed at parents and guardians of students with disabilities. The session featured key presentations from various local agencies that provide support services for individuals with disabilities, both during and after their public school education.
Emily Tatum, the director of special education, introduced Jeanette Hurd, the special education coordinator, and Angela McKissick, the president of the Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC). Each agency present offered insights into the services they provide, emphasizing their commitment to aiding students in their transition to adulthood.
Among the agencies highlighted was the Department of Aging and Rehabilitation Services, which focuses on preparing students and adults for employment through job exploration, counseling, and workplace readiness training. Their primary objective is to help individuals secure jobs in their chosen careers.
Patrick Henry Community College, recognized as one of Virginia's top community colleges, also participated by offering advising services tailored for students with disabilities. The college provides disability resource counselors to assist with accommodations and offers opportunities for students to explore four-year colleges.
The Disability Rights Resource Center presented its advocacy services, which include peer counseling and independent living skills training. They also discussed programs that help make homes more accessible for individuals with disabilities.
Piedmont Community Services reviewed various waivers available for those requiring additional support after high school. The meeting underscored the vital role of special education teachers in guiding students through their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
Following the presentations, parents and guardians engaged directly with the speakers to gather more information. The SEAC committee was praised for organizing the event, which aims to enhance future planning sessions for families of students with disabilities and increase community participation in these important discussions.
