During a recent government meeting, Maria Gilmore, a high school teacher and department chair for world languages, highlighted the success of the English Learners (EL) program at her school. With 39 English learners representing diverse backgrounds from countries such as Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Nigeria, Ukraine, India, and Thailand, the program has expanded significantly over the years.
Gilmore shared that the students speak a total of eight languages, including Thai, Russian, Ukrainian, Spanish, Gujarati, Hindi, and Yoruba. The EL program has evolved to include an EL teacher at every campus, reflecting its growth and the increasing support for English language learners.
One of the key events celebrated this year was the ninth annual EL Family Night, themed \"Dreamers,\" which aimed to foster community and engagement among students and their families. The theme was inspired by the book \"Dreamers\" by Yuyi Morales, which was read in the high school. This initiative underscores the commitment to inclusivity and the importance of cultural representation within the educational framework.
