During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the status of the National Opioid Settlement Fund, revealing that Richmond has received approximately $1.2 million, which was appropriated last October. Additionally, they anticipate receiving another $1.6 million, with ongoing funding expected annually until fiscal year 2039.
The funding amounts are projected to decrease over time, with the highest allocations occurring in the early years of the settlement. Officials noted that adjustments to these projections can occur, as evidenced by recent updates in May that indicated an increase in expected funding.
The city is also awaiting the outcome of a settlement with Kroger, which is expected to contribute further to the fund. A representative from the Virginia Opioid Abatement Authority provided a projection chart to assist in estimating future funding, and officials committed to sharing these projections with the council and providing periodic updates.
The meeting concluded with a motion to recommend the approval of the funding plan to the full council, emphasizing the importance of transparency and ongoing communication regarding the settlement funds.
