In a recent city council meeting, officials discussed the long-awaited Transportation Master Plan, marking the first comprehensive evaluation of Midvale's transportation infrastructure since 2016. The plan, developed by Parametrics, aims to address the unique challenges of a largely built-out community by balancing vehicular traffic with active transportation options such as walking and cycling.
Charles Allen, the lead consultant, presented the findings, emphasizing the importance of public engagement throughout the planning process. The city held multiple public events, including booths at local harvest days and a survey that gathered valuable community input. The plan outlines goals and recommendations for both roadway and active transportation projects, with a focus on improving existing conditions and preparing for future growth.
Key highlights from the presentation included an analysis of current traffic conditions, which revealed several trouble spots, particularly around Fort Union Boulevard and I-15. The plan proposes a series of roadway projects, primarily involving widening and adding travel lanes, as well as a robust list of active transportation improvements aimed at enhancing connectivity and safety for non-motorized users.
However, challenges remain in funding these initiatives. Allen noted that many proposed projects are ineligible for impact fees, a common funding mechanism used by cities to finance infrastructure improvements. This limitation could hinder the city's ability to implement the necessary upgrades.
The council expressed particular concern over the congestion on 7200 South, highlighting the need for immediate attention to this critical corridor. The Transportation Master Plan aims to provide a strategic framework for addressing these issues, with performance metrics to be reviewed biennially to track progress and effectiveness.
As Midvale moves forward with this plan, collaboration with state agencies and neighboring municipalities will be essential to ensure the successful execution of the proposed projects and to enhance the overall transportation landscape of the city.
