Residents expressed significant concerns during a recent government meeting regarding the intersection at Southwest 18th and State Route 7, particularly in light of a proposed drive-through restaurant that could increase traffic in the area. Community members highlighted the current lack of maintenance and proper markings at the intersection, which they believe exacerbates existing safety issues.
The intersection is described as challenging, with only one vehicle able to stage at the traffic light among three lanes, leading to confusion about which lane should proceed in which direction. This has resulted in dangerous traffic situations, especially during peak hours when the light allows only six cars to pass, often leaving 15 to 25 vehicles, including school buses, waiting.
While residents welcomed the redevelopment of the property, they urged local authorities and the developing company to conduct a thorough evaluation of the intersection's conditions and implement appropriate traffic markings to accommodate the anticipated increase in traffic volume.
In response, county officials indicated a willingness to collaborate with residents and relevant departments to address the concerns raised, including the possibility of discussing the matter further before the upcoming Board of County Commissioners meeting on the 21st.
