During a recent government meeting, council members discussed new legislation aimed at regulating parking in Glen Arden, particularly concerning commercial vehicles. Councilwoman Fareed emphasized that the definition of a commercial vehicle aligns with federal standards, specifically targeting vehicles with a gross weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more. Under the new ordinance, these larger vehicles will be prohibited from parking on city streets, while smaller work-related vehicles must be parked in driveways to prevent obstructions.

The council also addressed concerns about the potential increase in street parking if residents move their vehicles to accommodate commercial trucks in driveways. To mitigate this, an additional ordinance will limit the number of cars that can be parked on the street, ensuring that the streets remain accessible.

Council member Omitie Gaither raised questions regarding the implementation of previously passed parking permit legislation, which has been in place for two years without enforcement. She expressed frustration over the delay and the potential for ongoing parking issues if new regulations are not promptly enforced. In response, officials noted that changes in the code enforcement department have contributed to the delay, but they are now working on a plan to target specific streets for enforcement.

The discussions highlighted the council's commitment to addressing parking concerns while ensuring compliance with established regulations, although the timeline for enforcement remains a point of contention among members.
