During a recent government meeting, officials discussed safety concerns regarding a proposed development near the Pinellas Trail in Tarpon Springs. The conversation highlighted potential hazards for pedestrians and cyclists due to high-speed traffic on Keystone Road, which sees an average of nearly 28,000 vehicles daily, compared to just under 500 on Highland Avenue.

Concerns were raised about the lack of designated lanes for trail users at the access point, which could lead to dangerous interactions between vehicles and trail users. Recent counts indicated approximately 4,000 trail users per month in the area, emphasizing the need for safety measures.

The development proposal includes a waiver request for access points that align with the existing land development code, which mandates joint-use driveways to enhance safety. The board received a letter of support from the Friends of Pinellas Trail, an organization dedicated to trail maintenance and advocacy.

Officials noted that this site had previously been considered for development, but the earlier proposal was never realized. The current application, while less intense than the previous one, still raises similar safety concerns. If the waiver is approved, the board plans to implement significant improvements to the intersection to mitigate risks, including extending the westbound left turn lane and adjusting the trail's offset from Keystone Road to ensure safer crossings.
