In a recent government meeting, officials expressed gratitude for the successful collaboration between the City of Leon Valley and various community partners in environmental initiatives. Highlighting the achievements of the Bear Branches Alliance, representatives noted the planting of 146 trees across two projects in Leon Valley, including 42 trees at Driggers Elementary School.
The efforts were part of the Project Canopy program, aimed at addressing heat island effects and social vulnerability in high-risk areas. Over the past year, the initiative involved approximately 850 fourth and fifth-grade students from five elementary schools, resulting in a total of 510 trees planted.
In a recent volunteer event, around 75 participants, including representatives from Accenture, HEB, and Cox Automotive, contributed to planting 200 of the 235 trees along the Huebner Creek Greenway. The City’s Public Works Department played a crucial role by preparing the planting sites and ensuring the proper care of the trees, which will be maintained for three years.
Officials emphasized the importance of these projects in enhancing the community's green spaces and mitigating environmental challenges, expressing appreciation for the ongoing support from volunteers and local organizations.
