The discussion featured Navy veteran Everett Perry, Army veteran Derek Chandler, and Navy veteran Jonathan Ward, who shared their personal journeys into military service and the impact of their experiences.

Perry recounted his decision to join the Navy at 17, motivated by a desire for education and a sense of duty. Initially aiming to become a diesel mechanic, he was redirected to serve as a Navy corpsman, a role he embraced during his service, including a deployment during Desert Storm. He highlighted the challenges of training and the importance of readiness, noting that his unit was the first reserve unit recalled since Vietnam.

Chandler's path to military service was less conventional. After struggling to find direction in his life, he impulsively walked into a recruiter’s office and enlisted in the Army. His training coincided with the events of September 11, 2001, which dramatically shifted his perspective on military service. He later served in various capacities, including a deployment to Iraq, where he was part of a tank battalion and contributed to peacekeeping efforts.

Both veterans emphasized the transformative nature of their military experiences, reflecting on the camaraderie and skills they gained. They expressed gratitude for the support they received and the opportunities that followed their service, including educational benefits that facilitated their transitions to civilian life.
