During a recent government meeting, officials discussed significant updates regarding the replacement of aging service vehicles and the allocation of grant funding for victim services in Pennington County.

The meeting highlighted the successful replacement of two outdated service vehicles, specifically HVAC and plumbing vans, with taller models that can accommodate more tools and equipment. Additionally, two old boom trucks, one over 25 years old, were replaced with a towable boom lift, addressing ongoing mechanical issues. The need for a new plow truck was also emphasized, as the current vehicle, dating back to 2002 or 2004, is in poor condition and unable to meet the demands of additional plowing sites.

In a separate discussion, officials addressed the impact of funding cuts to victim services due to changes in the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA). Jennifer Williams Carl, the grant manager, explained that a significant reduction in funding necessitated the application for a one-time grant from the South Dakota Attorney General's office. This grant, amounting to $141,000, aims to support ongoing victim services and provide direct assistance to victims of crime, including safety measures such as hotel accommodations and home security improvements.

Laura Retzel, Pennington County's state's attorney, noted that the funding would help subsidize victim advocates and enhance direct services for victims, which had been severely compromised due to previous funding cuts. The meeting concluded with motions to approve the vehicle replacements and the grant application, both of which were passed unanimously.

These discussions underscore the county's commitment to maintaining essential services and addressing the needs of vulnerable populations amid financial challenges.
