In a recent school board meeting, key discussions centered around upcoming projects, student performance metrics, and administrative updates. The board announced its next meeting scheduled for December 9, coinciding with the winter break from December 23 to January 3, during which students will observe various holidays.
A significant focus was placed on site improvements at RC Hill and Irene King Elementary Schools, where aging parking lots are set for replacement. The district has secured a $750,000 non-match grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to fund these critical upgrades, which are expected to commence next summer and conclude before August 2025.
The board also reviewed the proposed school calendar for the next academic year, which has been drafted by a committee comprising board members, educators, and parents. This calendar will be made available for public comment before final approval in December.
In terms of staffing, two job descriptions for human resources positions were presented for review, with plans to seek board approval in the upcoming meeting.
The meeting included a detailed presentation on the Illinois School Report Card, highlighting trends in student enrollment and performance. The district has seen a decline in enrollment from 16,826 in 2018 to 14,760 this fall, although there has been a slight uptick recently. Notably, Valley View remains one of the most diverse school districts in Illinois, with increasing percentages of Hispanic and Black students.
Chronic absenteeism continues to be a challenge, with rates still double those of 2019, reflecting ongoing impacts from the pandemic. However, the district has made strides in academic performance, particularly in English Language Arts (ELA), where proficiency rates have improved across all student groups, surpassing state averages.
The report card also indicated that for the first time, all Valley View schools received commendable ratings or higher, with Jane Adams School achieving an exemplary designation. The data presented reflects the previous school year and is updated annually around November 1.
The meeting concluded with no reports from legal services or associations, and board members expressed gratitude for their collaborative efforts. The next meeting is anticipated to address further developments and actions based on the discussions held.
