The ongoing tensions between Hezbollah and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have raised significant concerns for peacekeeping operations in Lebanon, particularly along the Blue Line. Recent reports from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) indicate that clashes and exchanges of fire continue to pose risks to peacekeepers in the region.
This past weekend, a patrol consisting of French and Finnish peacekeepers encountered a denial of freedom of movement in the village of Bidaya, where they were obstructed by a group of individuals, at least one of whom was armed. Despite this challenge, the patrol successfully navigated around the obstruction and continued its mission. Shortly thereafter, near the village of Marake, the patrol was fired upon approximately 40 times but managed to return safely to their base in Der Akifa. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported among the peacekeepers, although some UN vehicles sustained damage from gunfire.
In a separate incident on Friday, a 155 millimeter live artillery shell struck a UN position in Sharma but did not detonate. An Italian bomb disposal expert promptly secured the area, removed the unexploded ordnance, and conducted a controlled detonation.
UNIFIL has reiterated the importance of all parties respecting the safety and security of UN personnel and property, emphasizing the need to uphold the inviolability of UN premises. Despite the ongoing challenges, peacekeepers remain committed to their mission of monitoring and reporting violations of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
