In a recent government meeting, the executive director of Gateway 180 highlighted the impactful use of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to support a shelter-to-housing initiative. The program, which received approximately $500,000 in funding, aimed to facilitate rapid rehousing for families experiencing homelessness.
Running from October 2022 to September 2024, the program was designed to motivate individuals and families to enter shelters or transitional living situations, thereby increasing their engagement with services that help reduce housing barriers. The initiative included comprehensive support services such as case management, housing navigation, on-site counseling, therapy, and mental health services, which were deemed unique and beneficial.
Despite its success, the program had to conclude prematurely due to the exhaustion of funds. During its operation, Gateway 180 successfully assisted 57 families, totaling 161 individuals, in securing stable housing. Remarkably, participants were able to transition to permanent housing within an average of 30 days following their referral to the program, achieving a success rate of 94%.
Post-program, 45% of the families continued to engage with Gateway 180 through a case management program, indicating ongoing support and stability for those who had graduated from the shelter system. The executive director expressed gratitude for the ARPA funding, emphasizing its critical role in providing stability not only for the families involved but also for the broader community.
