In a recent government meeting, representatives from various community organizations reported significant reductions in gun violence in several neighborhoods of St. Louis, attributed to the ongoing efforts of the Show Me Peace initiative, funded by the Office of Violence Prevention. Jason Watson, program manager of Show Me Peace, highlighted a remarkable 67% decrease in gun violence in Dutchtown, a 43% reduction in the Ville, and an impressive 100% reduction in homicides in Walden Park over the past year. Wells Goodfellow also saw an 88% drop in gun violence.
Watson emphasized the importance of community engagement, stating that the initiative employs individuals who have either experienced or been affected by gun violence, allowing them to connect authentically with their neighborhoods. He urged for continued and increased funding to expand their outreach to other areas in need.
Lieutenant John Applegate, commander of St. Louis City Intelligence, reported on the allocation of $2.6 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding, which facilitated the purchase of 26 new surveillance cameras and 20 mobile camera trailers to enhance public safety. The investment aims to improve monitoring in areas previously lacking adequate surveillance.
The meeting underscored a collaborative approach to violence prevention, combining community-led initiatives with technological advancements to foster safer neighborhoods.
