During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the urgent need to increase the water impact fee from $3,000 to $6,000 to cover the debt service associated with the financing of a new water tower and production well. This adjustment comes after previous estimates in 2019, which anticipated costs that ultimately proved to be significantly lower than the actual expenses incurred.
The proposed increase is aimed at ensuring that the costs associated with these essential infrastructure projects are borne by new developments rather than existing residents. Currently, the sewer impact fee remains at $18,000, as no adjustments were necessary following recent bids.
Public concerns were raised regarding the rapid growth in Leonardtown, particularly with the development of multiple residential projects such as Leonard's Grama, Clark's Rest, and Meadows Run. A resident expressed frustration over increasing traffic congestion, especially at key intersections like Route 5 and 245, which are frequently backed up throughout the day. The resident emphasized the need for better planning to accommodate this growth, citing potential issues with parking and traffic flow, particularly with the anticipated development of Tudor Hall.
Concerns were also voiced about the infrastructure capabilities to support these new developments, including water supply and sewage management. The resident questioned whether Tudor Hall would rely on the town's resources or develop its own systems, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the impact of ongoing growth on the community's infrastructure.
