During a recent meeting of the Community and Curriculum Advisory Committee (CCAC), parents and committee members voiced strong support for the reinstatement of a remote virtual program (RVP) that had previously served medically fragile students. Families have been actively attending board meetings since May, advocating for the program's return, emphasizing its importance for children with special education needs as well as those who thrive in a virtual learning environment.
The committee discussed ongoing efforts to communicate public testimony to the Board of Education, with a focus on ensuring that the voices of families are heard. A request for acknowledgment of previous communications was made, highlighting the need for better responsiveness from the Board.
In addition to the RVP discussions, the committee provided updates on the Board of Education recommendation process. Recent workshops aimed at brainstorming potential solutions for educational challenges were noted, with many ideas aligning with the Board's current priorities. The committee is preparing for a presentation to the Board scheduled for December 11, with a deadline for final recommendations set for November 18.
Community engagement was also a key theme, with parents sharing information about a successful adaptive trick-or-treat event and a new inclusive Special Olympics league hosted at Rock Creek School. However, concerns were raised about communication gaps regarding such events, with some parents unaware of opportunities available for their children.
The meeting concluded with a call for improved communication strategies to ensure that families are informed about community resources and events, particularly those not directly sponsored by the school system. The committee expressed a commitment to enhancing outreach and collaboration to better serve the needs of all students and families in the community.
